Defense

"I have stated that it is defense more than anything else that wins championships."
-Vince Lombardi

Malcomb Gladwell wrote an article entitled "The Sure Thing" in a recent New Yorker issue. (January 18, 2010) In the article, two French scholars Michel Vilette and Catherine Vuillermot set out to discover what exactly successful entrepreneurs have in common. In their findings, they discovered that entrepreneurs hedged their bets and minimized their chances of failure. The truly successful businessmen in Vilette's and Vuillermot's town are anything but risk takers.

Gladwell goes on to illustrate this by referring to Ted Turner. He says, "Once you get past the more flamboyant aspects of Turner's personal life, there is little evidence that he had any real appetite for risk at all."

Being an ex-football coach, I agree with the article and Lombardi when he says that one wins championships with good defense.
